Memorex 1.44MB USB Floppy Drive (Black) Review

I got a Memorex USB floppy drive locally and the box is slightly different, but it is probably the same item.For the record, the part number on mine is 3202 3239.With that caveat, I would say that this drive is quite nice (assuming the one shown here is identical).Mine has a built-in USB cable, about 2 foot long.It was recognized without trouble by Windows XP.And the best thing is that it is fast in both reading and writing.While I have not done a careful comparison, I would estimate it is maybe a 2X.I can at least say that my unit is NOT one of those slow internal floppy drives that goes click, pause, click, pause, as it glacially writes a large file, nor rrrwww, click, rrrwww, click as it tries to seek to the file allocation table when accessing multiple files.It acts much more like the 4X floppy I once used in a Sony digital camera (perhaps the speed improvement in this USB unit is simply a result of the USB channel the data goes through compared to the old ribbon cable port on built-in floppy drives...).
The two minor negatives I can think of are that it is a little loud and Windows refused to dismount it when I selected "safely remove hardware" from the task-bar.The former is not an issue in my application and I solved the latter by just pulling the USB cable after waiting for all activity to stop.A few tests of using it again showed that I had not upset the driver.It worked fine.
In summary - it is very capable and I plan to buy another soon for work since we have lots of expensive test equipment that writes screen captures to floppies and I fear that floppies are not long for this world - so I'm stocking up now :-)

Saitek Pro Flight Yoke with Three-Lever Throttle (PZ44) Review

Well I just did some research on this yoke and discovered that Sietek has resolved the phantom keystroke issue. New replacement units are shipping to all US distributers. If you happen to have a defective unit, per a post on Sietek's forum, owners are to call 310-972-9930 for return/replacement instructions. I am going to order one myself but am not sure if Amozon has the new units yet. Sietec refused to post a current serial number of the defective lot but a person on the forums said that he just got his and is working flawlessly with a serial number of SZ005111624. This person with a "good" unit purchased his thru Newegg in CA.

Well I am going to place my order now and I will post an update when I get it up and running.UPDATE:I recieved the yoke and pedals three days ago and after spending an hour or so configuring the unit I fired it up. The SN# I recieved was 00492657 a call to tech support assured me that I had a unit that had the phathom key stroke problem resolved.

I spent about a total of 20 hours flying around in several planes whith included single engine ceasna's all the way up to the heavy 747. I WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY YOKE. I was very impressed with the quality and performance. I took a gamble but in my case I think it payed off.

Also for anyone wondering if this yoke works with a mac don't worry. I hooked the yoke up to my mac and am running xplane ver.9. The drivers were not needed it was simply plug n play. Xplane recognized the yoke and throttles with no problem. It was very simple to program.

Syba Ultra Ide To Cf Adapter Dual Ide 40/44PIN To Compact Flash Review

This Compactflash to IDE adapter works fine. It accepts a CF card and converts the pinout to either a 2.5" (laptop) or 3.5" (desktop) IDE male connector. Your existing IDE cable (female end) just plugs into this adapter as it normally would for a hard drive. Power for the adapter can be supplied thru 3 options:
1. a 3.5" power connector (i.e. a floppy drive power connector from your PC's power supply)
2. the 44pin (2.5" IDE) data cable, since it supplies 5V
3. via the 40 pin (3.5") IDE cable (only if 5V is supplied by the motherboard on pin 20). Note that this is only supported by some motherboards, so for the most part you'd want to power it either of the above two options.

There are jumpers to set Master/Slave IDE settings, CF voltage (3V or 5V, most CF cards should work on the default 5V setting), and CF power source (External via the floppy power connector/44pin cable OR pin 20 on the 40pin cable as mentioned above).

There are also 3 LEDs to show Power, CF Detected, and Activity status. The nice thing is each LED is a different color so it's easy to see what's going on.

The CF card must be pushed in/pulled out by hand to install/remove. There is no eject lever. Note that CF cards CANNOT be hot-plugged or removed while in operation, damage or data corruption would most likely occur.

One interesting thing about CF->IDE adapters is that people claim some types don't support DMA (for faster data transfer). This is purely a function of the CF card, not the adapter - the IDE controller integrated on the CF card determines whether DMA is supported, not the CF->IDE adapter.

I always try to go HP when possible for two reasons. They always do a solid job at building great products AND they back the products with the best customer service I have ever seen. I doubt I will ever need customer service for this USB floppy, but I am always willing to pay the extra bucks to get HP quality. I have bought anything from $40,000 plotters and servers to $400 photosmart printers to $20 keyboards from HP and they have always been solid produts.

Gps USB Navigation Receiver By Ambicom Review

I bought this as a replacement for a PC GPS that burnt out after several years of hard use, and this one just does not cut it.It tends to lose lock with the sats very easily, the position it does give is often running 100+ meters off (for those that know what it means, I think the thing is usually pulling a FOM 6 or 8... wide margin of error), and the body is so cheaply made that after a month, the case has split.

Get something else for your GPS needs.

1.44MB USB External Floppy Disk Drive (Black) Review

Received in good working order, and it's nice and quiet.Plug & Play in Win XP (no drivers needed), but a driver disk is included for Win 98 (which probably works for Win 2000 too).

It's a generic "Made in China" product on the outside, but I found a NEC FD3238T slim floppy drive on the inside (common in lots of different laptops).

What I'm not thrilled about is the manufacture date of 10/2005 found inside...nearly SIX years ago.Something to consider before purchasing this "new" product.
